            • Thomas Forrest Kelly: Beethoven's Ninth Symphony Then and Now

              In this illustrated talk, Thomas Forrest Kelly will take us back to 1824 Vienna and the first performance of what may be the most famous piece of classical music: but in 1824 it was unknown and revolutionary.

              Thomas Forrest Kelly is Morton B. Knafel Research Professor of Music at Harvard University, and serves on the faculty of the Historical Performance Program at The Juilliard School. He is the author of Capturing Music (Norton, 2015); First Nights: Five Performance Premieres (Yale Univ. Press); Early Music: A Very Short Introduction (Oxford, Univ. Press); his The Beneventan Chant (Cambridge) was awarded the Otto Kinkeldey Award of the American Musicological. He is a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres of the French Republic and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Academy in Rome, and the Medieval Academy of America.
