            • Salem State Community Chorus Concert

The Salem State Community Chorus presents “Salem by the Sea: A Musical Tapestry” in celebration of Salem 400+ on May 12 (open dress rehearsal) and May 13 (performance) at 7 pm. The concert takes place in Salem State’s Recital Hall located at 71 Loring Avenue. The nautically themed evening features works by Salem composers and writers past and present, reflecting the rich musical and literary legacy of the city. Salem resident Edward Lundergan will conduct his composition “The Ocean”, commissioned for this concert. The piece is a setting of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s poem by the same name. Salem native and Salem State alumni Javier Marquez will conduct his composition, “Passing Hours”, a setting of a poem by Ella Higginson. Also included on the program are works by Charlotte Forten, Arthur Foote and Patrick Gilmore. Additional guests include Bob Strom, local author, musician and historian who will join the chorus on Salem Willows for Mine and Get Off the Track and share his song research during the concert. Percussionist Jabari Tovar, Salem Public Schools music educator and Salem State alumni joins the chorus on several musical selections. The chorus, established in 2017, is directed by Lynn Shane with Joe Stroup at the piano. Admission is free, although donations at the door are welcome to support the work of the chorus. Parking is available across the street from 71 Loring Ave. in the lot marked F/C.
