SALEM —The House of the Seven Gables gets into the spirit of Trails & Sails with three special events that highlight history unique to storied Essex County. The three events featured at The Gables are part of founder Caroline Emmerton’s 150th birthday, which is being celebrated throughout 2016. Sponsored and organized by the Essex National Heritage Area, Trails and Sails offers more than 150 free events all over Essex County. Participants will be able to explore this region’s wealth of historic, cultural and natural sites both on land and on the water. Friday, September 16, 12 noon: Caroline Emmerton’s House of the Seven Gables: A Pre-1920 Tour Step back in time with a tour of The House of the Seven Gables as it was conceived and written by founder Caroline Emmerton before 1920. Hear Emmerton’s very own museum interpretation, informed by the culture of the time. This is the tour she and other tour guides used when escorting The Gables’ earliest visitors. You’ll also learn how research conducted over the years has helped Gables’ historians create a more accurate story. Reservations required. Walk-ins cannot be accommodated.
