Community Meet & Greet with Salem's new Police Chief Lucas Miller

The official swearing-in ceremony for Salem’s new Police Chief, Lucas J. Miller, will take place on Tuesday, June 8th at 10:00 a.m. The ceremony will be streamed live online at www.facebook.com/cityofsalemma, and will be broadcast on Salem Access TV live on Channel 3 (in Salem) and on the SATV YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/user/salemtv1) as well.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, attendance at the swearing-in ceremony is by invitation only; however, there will be a Community Meet and Greet with Chief Miller at Armory Park at the corner of Essex Street and New Liberty Street from 11:30AM to 12:30PM after the ceremony on June 8th. Salem’s residents and members of the business community are welcome to stop by and meet Salem’s new Police Chief at the Meet and Greet.
Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll appointed Lucas J. Miller chief of police of the Salem Police Department on May 1, 2021. Chief Miller began his law enforcement career as a special police officer with the Wellfleet, Massachusetts Police Department in 1986 before joining the ranks of the New York Police Department (NYPD) as a patrolman in 1990. During his thirty-year career with the NYPD, Miller served in a variety of frontline policing roles including patrol officer, community police officer, detective, patrol supervisor, detective supervisor, homicide supervisor, and detective squad commander. He has served in the Patrol Bureau, the Narcotics Division, the Detective Bureau, the Intelligence Bureau and most recently as a detective lieutenant with the NYPD-FBI Joint Terrorist Task Force (JTTF) where he oversaw investigations of terrorism and terror-related crimes. Chief Miller earned his baccalaureate degree from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, New York City, and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy (Class 271).  He is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association, the Massachusetts Major Cities Chiefs of Police and the Essex County Chiefs of Police Association.   
Chief Miller now leads a police department of four captains, eight lieutenants, fourteen sergeants, sixty-four patrol officers and twenty full and part-time dispatchers and civilian employees.  The Salem Police Department is accredited through the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission (MPAC) and is a member of the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (NEMLEC).
