Ngudi Raras: An Evening of Gamelan Music
Ngudi Raras, master musicians from Central Java, perform an evening of gamelan music in Salem State’s Recital Hall (71 Loring Ave.) on Monday, April 2 at 7:30 pm. The performers in this ensemble are considered among the greatest living exponents of this music. This unique concert experience will be guided by spontaneous performance practice (klenèngan bébas) and an informal, organic atmosphere. The music is highly improvisational and makes use of little or no written notation. There is no conductor and all of the musicians are able to play all of the instruments in the ensemble. Audience members will have the option of sitting on the stage with the musicians on cushions and mats, creating a very intimate experience of the music. Tickets for this concert are $20 general, $15 seniors and non-Salem State students 18 and up, free for students under 18. Additional information is available at salemstatetickets.com or 978.542.6365. This performance is sponsored by Salem State University’s Music and Dance Department and Center for Creative and Performing Arts (salemstate.edu/arts).
